Well I like three syllables And here’s the reason why Four is too many Cause I’m a Methadone guy Yeah… Cause I’m Methadone guy Yeah…Cause I’m Methadone guy Well they gave me a test Asked me the color of the sky I said I won’t answer that question Cause I’m a Methadone guy Yeah… Cause I’m Methadone guy Yeah…Cause I’m Methadone guy Well Sherlock stole Shirley from Sam Because she liked getting high When Sam asked why she left him She said because he’s a Methadone guy Yeah…He’s a Methadone Guy Yeah…He’s a Methadone Guy Well Sally went to Charlottesville And gave it that old college try But she ran away with a professor Cause he was a Methadone guy Yeah…He was a Methadone guy Yeah…He was a Methadone guy Well Lawrence said to Larry Do you know how to fly? And Larry said of course I do Cause I’m a Methadone guy Yeah… Cause I’m Methadone guy Yeah…Cause I’m Methadone guy Well Aristotle asked Socrates Why he was starting to cry He said they gave him hemlock Cause he was a Methadone guy Yeah…he was a Methadone guy Yeah…he was a Methadone guy

She said I’ll love & cherish you forever He said I’ll never cheat on you… no not ever She found him so handsome, rich & clever They said kind of love would last forever. They were liars in love They were liars in love They were liars in love Wealth seemed like such a wonderful blessing Acquisition became her driving obsession She invaded Madison Avenue without discretion She began treating him like a pet possession She was a liar in love She was a liar in love She was a liar in love He met this beautiful young girl from Lisbon His eyes undressed her with x-ray vision A post card of pornographic precision At the time it seemed like such an easy decision He was a liar in love He was a liar in love He was a liar in love They were eating sushi at Nobu She said I’m afraid you don’t even have the first clue Did you think you could so easily deceive me? He said if there some reason that you no longer believe me? They were liars in love They were liars in love They were liars in love,

Well I’ve been thinking About a whole lot of nothing Just grinding these wheels in the sand And I’ve been using A whole lot of everything Not exactly the kind of life I had planned When this morning arrived All my dreams had vanished Like childhood memories from long ago And the barroom mirror was shattered And I heard my voice choking As I stared into the reflection Of someone I didn’t even know Long gone were the sweet lullabies Sung for the little boy with the pale blue eyes Who woke up one morning to the great big surprise That there was no one left to turn to This train’s done come off the tracks The last station’s been burned And there’s nowhere in this world left to hide This silence keeps on screaming Why aren’t the birds singing? Has every little wing been broken? Just snapped in two Makes me blue but so do you When I remember how high we once flew Now I’m just crawling away Just crawling away I’m just crawling away Just crawling away I’m just crawling away Just crawling away

Wedding Day 04:04
Wedding day Oh what a mess Your sister threw up On your wedding dress But we laughed all day And drank & drank Until we walked down The old lover’s plank Your stepdad mumbled While giving you away The maid of honor said He pinched her along the way In the bathroom stall We snorted another line And washed it down With cheap wedding wine Why do we…. hate ourselves Undoing the little love…. we know Why do we ….deceive ourselves? With every single step…. we go Little brick ranch house In Westover Hills We worked like dogs Trying to pay the bills Two kids in a minivan And a satellite dish Are we happy now? That we got our wish See the anniversaries Just come and go Warm summer rain And dirty sleet and snow Working the nightshift Still pushing the broom Sometimes it feels like We’re living inside a tomb

Well Sarah said nothing As she turned away from me in disdain I guess she’d heard it all too many times before I suppose she wanted to run away from the pain Where do you go? When there’s no place to go What do you say? When there’s nothing left to say Well we used to sing our sweet love song Our voices were wedded in harmony She walked out on me this morning Said there was nothing left here but faded memories Where do you go? When there’s no place to go What do you say? When there’s nothing left to say I watched her getting on the bus Wearing dark sunglasses Like she knew where she was going Though we both knew better Spokane isn’t for the weak of heart It’s not like Seattle Sometimes you need a little medicine Just to fight all these daily battles Where do you go? When there’s no place to go What do you say? When there’s nothing left to say

I was hallucinating Jesus I was walking the tightrope I was aiming for heaven But my lifeline broke I was strung out And running out of rope The waitress cut me off Said she despised that kind of joke Bartender said I needed to pay-up & go I was feeling kind of sick It was beginning to snow Why was I sitting here? Well I really didn’t know Babylon was kind of creepy But I had nowhere else to go I heard someone behind me Saying he knew me way back when But it’s easier seeing the beginning of things Much harder seeing the end My head started spinning I was hearing strange voices The woman next to me said We all make our own choices Flashlights were shining My crucifix was glowing Police cars pulling up outside I watched everyone going Bartender said I needed to pay-up & go I was feeling kind of dizzy It was beginning to snow I said I had nowhere to go

Toxic Wonder 04:41
Was that something burning? Maybe last night’s pizza still in the stove? But when he texted you to join him You stole your mother’s car and drove All the way from Tampa to Tallahassee In the driving rain and early morning thunder You were already shedding your old skin When you made your deal with the Toxic Wonder Sixteen years old and already using Tired of having to wait for your tomorrows He invited you into his motel room Saying he had a little something to cure your sorrows There was something about him that didn’t seem human But then the drug’s warm rush just swept you under You were staring at the dirt underneath his fingernails When you made your deal with the Toxic Wonder Your mother called you the most fucked up child Said you were good for nothing at all As she sat by the pool drinking her margaritas Spitting salt into a wound festered and raw So much for sweet dreams and high hopes You were never meant for that kind of easy slumber No you were staring into the peephole of disaster When you made your deal with the Toxic Wonder It was so much easier just going with the flow Knowing change is always the hardest part But why inflict your pain on anyone else? When the world’s already full of broken hearts Yeah but you did your best to hide your disappointment Knowing he already had your number And you felt just like crawling out of your skin When you made your deal with the Toxic Wonder

Well I never saw it coming I was just a boy playing in the band But she found a way into my heart It seemed so carefully planned Because she struck the match That lit love’s sweet short fuse I thought I was in heaven But I was only being used Molly was a good kisser You know I couldn’t resist her Molly was a good kisser And I’m always going to miss her Well the years keep flying by There’s nothing that we can do But I’ll always cherish the time we spent together Because her memory always seems to pull me through The last I heard she was dancing Looking for a gentleman in DC No matter what I ever said That girl never listened to me Molly was a good kisser You know I couldn’t resist her Molly was a good kisser And I’m always going to miss her I’ve got a place in deep down my heart That’s reserved for her memory A thing so beautiful and fragile That I keep it hidden under lock and key She was my Venus in Furs I was the drummer boy keeping beat You know she was my every little thing I still dream about her in my sleep Molly was a good kisser You know I could never resist her Molly was a good kisser And I’m always going to miss her

Jenny said he was pathetic Stealing from his own in-laws Well the cat’s out of the bag Now here come the claws Tommy raised his eyebrows As he studied the ice cubes in his drink She said what do you have to say for yourself? He said I need a little time to think Welcome to the Museum of Messed-Up Stories Welcome to the Museum of Messed-Up Stories Tommy said there’s no reason to freak out Though I know where you’re coming from It was a fucked up thing to do Sometimes I wonder what’s to come So why don’t we leave this dive Instead of making another ugly scene I’ll find a way to pay them back Just as soon as we get clean Welcome to the Museum of Messed-Up Stories Welcome to the Museum of Messed-Up Stories They waited outside the Lucky Seven The freak show had begun Jenny pulled the price tags off their ski masks Tommy reached under the seat for his gun It was just past midnight When they faced the begging night clerk Jenny just wanted drug money But Tommy decided to be a jerk Welcome to the Museum of Messed-UP Stories Welcome to the Museum of Messed-UP Stories

Oh Silly Me 03:11
Well she was my obsession I just couldn’t stay away But my watch kept on stopping And the night slipped away So I showed up this morning Well isn’t that just like me? Didn’t see the need for knocking I assumed she was free Oh silly me Oh silly me I thought it was midnight When it was 10 past 3 Oh silly me Oh silly me You can’t trust love You can’t trust love Well I thought it was early That’s what my watch read Thought she’d be happy Seeing me kneel by her bed But three’s a crowd Unless you like it that way And now the book’s been written There’s nothing left to say Oh silly me Oh silly me I thought it was midnight When it was 10 past 3 Oh silly me Oh silly me You can’t trust love You can’t trust love

Well it’s a beautiful morning And I’m running through the park All these birds are singing I’m hearing my pit bull bark Me I’m so happy Just as free as free can be I’m kicking up my heels Living in the lap of luxury Sorry about your situation You probably thinking it’s my fault I guess I got lucky Sorry that you got caught Now some people sell While other’s just get bought Me I’m living the dream Sorry that you got caught Your girlfriend was so lonely I hated seeing her so sad She moved in with me last week I hope you aren’t mad Well I look out for myself I have no regrets Please let me know If you need a another carton of cigarettes Sorry about your situation You probably thinking it’s my fault I guess I got lucky Sorry that you got caught Now some people sell And other’s just get bought Me I’m living the dream Sorry that you got caught

Well I got clean last October Court ordered and all Detoxed down at Muscala Then thirty days rehab in St Paul I got sent home for Thanksgiving Given a clean bill of health I wore my best flannel shirt A conspicuous show of my wealth But my sister didn’t want to see me And Mama didn’t trust me with the carving knife Daddy was staring out the window And my brother was making fun of his wife Then Aunt Ginny said the blessing Said they were grateful I was back at home And I nodded my head in agreement But somehow I still felt all alone Fast forward to January Christmas tree lying next to the street I was watching CSI reruns in bed Listening to the rain and sleet I heard my phone start ringing It was Tommy on the other end He said he’d heard I was back home From one of my brother’s friends Meet me down at the Station he said If you’re tired of staring at those four walls I know this girl who has a friend And he’s willing to make a few calls Well you know the rest of the story It’s one that’s been told a million times You just have to change the faces and names And read in between the lines

about

Hard World is a late night drive into a world filled with wrong turns and dead-end streets. It’s wide blend of pop folk musings, roots rock stompers and fractured southern gothic noir mines a myriad of influences ranging from Johnny Cash and exile period Rolling Stones to the stories of Raymond Carver.
